My friends were wise to call you out on it, but being slightly benevolent today, thought I might try to educate you on this. @strange-pineapple - I’m going to make the presumption that since you are Australian, you might be missing some of the dynamics in question for American socio-political issue here. I’m also going to take the time and educate and inform since you are still a minor and (I hope) willing to listen and learn.
In America, the systemic problems are focused on those who aren’t white. In America, because of past problems in racial discrimination and society-enforced limitations on an association, voting, equality, and equity (which those are different), Black people, in general, are at a huge disadvantage. After socio-political events culminating in the deaths of young black men, one of which was at the hands of police, gave rise to Black Lives Matter. While there are as many white men gunned down by police, those aren’t focused on by the media. No one gives a s* if a meth head gets gunned down. An innocent black man, in his own back yard? Yeah, folks give a s* about that and police not behaving properly.
Because of media optics (and the rise of the citizen journalist with Twitter, FB Live, Snapchat and Instagram/Periscope) anyone with a smartphone can livestream said events - which unfortunately include police executing young black men instead of arresting them and letting the courts and juries decide.
There have been countless situations where a young black man is gunned down by police (and old ones too, like Walter Scott) while a young white man, who has committed mass murder, is given special treatment, coddled, infantilized, and given additional benefits that aren’t afforded to black men and black people in general.
In short, there is a big problem. Black Lives Matter was formed for civil rights protesting (which is guaranteed in the US), agitation for change in these systemic problems (for instance, how black children are 2x likely to have discipline problems before they turn 13 and fall behind in education, and the vicious cycle of not receiving the best possible opportunities afforded to those who are white.)
Saying All Live Matter is intentionally ignoring a substantial problem to divert from it, to placate someone who is completely uncomfortable learning about the problems occurring to those who aren’t white.
For instance, since you are Australian, it would be looking at the issue with Aboriginals and saying their plight and loss of opportunity is not important to everyone in Australia having worth.
See the problem? It focuses the issues onto you without fixing a damn thing about the original problem in the first place.
So yes, if you want to act like a self-important liberal-minded young lady, sure. All Lives Matter. But if you are caught speeding 15km over the speed limit in possession of illegal narcotics, you are 100% less likely to be beaten to death, or shot, by a cop with a huge chip on their shoulder. You’re less likely to be mistreated before getting to the lock-up for driving over the speed limit in possession of illegal narcotics.
And you’re more than likely going to get diversion or have your case tossed because you can afford good legal counsel, can smile pretty at a judge and have them believe you about the pills being for someone not you. You’ll also be 200% likely to not have your car impounded and kept for civil seizure and have to pay for a new one than someone who is a PoC.
Now I hope you understand why saying All Lives Matter in this context makes you sound incredibly foolish?

So I like hot stuff. I’m not like, a dick about it. I don’t brag because there are people out there that can handle waaaay hotter foods than me. It’s not a competition.
So I’m at Tijuana Flats, a “mexican” food restaurant chain famous for their hot sauce bar. All in all, what they put out on the bar isn’t the spiciest stuff in the world, but you’ll find some delicious gems in there.
I immediately look at whatever is marked black as hottest for the day (they change them) and immediately go to pump some into the little paper containers provided when…
“Whooaaa, sweetheart you don’t want to do that,”
I turned around and there’s this skinny guy in jeans and a logo polo. There’s another dude wearing the same shirt, so they must have come here from some sad IT job. I’m a little taken aback at this dude’s presumption that I am ignorant to what I’m doing, but I blow it off.
”Nah, man, it’s got the black label, I haven’t tried this one yet.”
”Are you sure? It’s really spicy.”
”I’m pretty sure dude.”
”I don’t think you should, because it was a bit much for me.”
At this point I’m feeling patronized. I stare at him.
“It’s fine. Really.”
“Oooookay,” He says in this exasperated, don’t-say-I-didn’t-warn-you kind of voice. I get my hot sauce and sit down. Food arrives, I taste it with a chip first to test. It’s super sweet, actually. I dump the whole thing on my taco. I don’t know if he’s watching.
I go up to the counter and ask the manager to ring me up a bottle of the sauce to take home. It was pretty delicious! Manager says he’ll bring it to my table.
They bring it, I pay, and the server asks if I’m into hot sauces - of course I say yes. Hot Sauce Police is now watching. She brings me an assortment of sauces they do not serve at the bar because of liability reasons. One of them was rated at 1.5 million Scoville units. I bought all of them, signing the credit card slip as he watches.
I finished my meal.
Then I looked right at him and licked the fucking paper container when I was done.
It’s the two year anniversary of the incident.

It’s racial discrimination to treat someone less polite than someone else would be treated in the same circumstances, because of race. We can’t ignore the case of blatant racism. We MUST draw public attention to such cases. We must ensure that racists are identified and socially discredited. There are no reasons or excuses for racism. It’s just disgusting.

Ok so i work for Airbnb. And they actually don’t fucking play with discrimination. At all. We were banning people who were going to Charlottesville for the riot. But they can’t do anything unless we are told. And the most common thing i hear is “i don’t want to start a ruckus or cause any trouble” but.. in order to prevent this stuff… we need people to. Don’t stay silent.
